Assisting engineers, contractors and fabrication companies to meet welding procedure quality/legal objectives

Service Overview

AIO Welding Inspection Services (AWIS) offers a variety of inspection services and are one of the few organisations that can provide senior welding inspectors. We also have our own in-house weld testing facilities or our welding inspectors can come to your site to test your welders.

So if you are an engineer, design or construction contractor or a fabrication company, AWIS can assist you meet your project’s quality and legal objectives by undertaking inspection activities on your behalf.

  • Dimensional and visual inspection
  • Fabrication and welding inspection
  • Fabrication and welding supervision
  • Develop and provide welding procedure
  • Consultancy and Pre inspection meetings
  • Pre fabrication vendor document reviews

Why chose AWIS to run your welding procedure specification?

  • Based on our extensive experience and having practical welding knowledge along with the fact our inspectors have produced thousands of welding procedures PQR/ WPS
  • We can help to reduce your overall welding costs by increasing process efficiency
  • We refine the welding procedures and processes and make them as efficient as possible.
  • We can conduct these off site allowing your production staff to do what you employ them for.
  • We start with the end goal in mind, which is making your welding operations compliant, yet user friendly and productive.

WELD PROCEDURE SPECIFICATION (WPS)

A welding procedure specification (WPS) is a critical part of the welding quality puzzle and without a WPS it is difficult if not impossible to demonstrate to a client that you have control over your welding operations.

It addresses all the essential variables of the intended process/processes to be used and ensures that the desired mechanical properties of the welds are obtained in an efficient, economical and practical manner, whilst also meeting the acceptance criteria of the nominated Code/Standard. This is provided to the welding personnel and serves as their work instruction.

An impractical welding procedure can hamstring your project by placing unnecessary restrictions or by creating an unusable set of conditions. To avoid this prior to the weld test commencing, a welding inspector develops a procedure qualification record (PQR).

The PQR is a record of actual/nominal welding variables such as the Material Grade, Pre Heat Temperature, Maximum Inter Pass Temperature, Temperature Check Method, Pre Heat Method, Amperage, Volts, Polarity, Travel Speed, Wire Speed etc.

PROCEDURE QUALIFICATION RECORD (PQR)

The intent of the PQR is to allow for the variables in the welding process and ensure operators stay within ranges. This helps to ensure product quality.

“For example, it typically allows for a plus or minus
of 10% amps, 7% volts and 15% travel speed”

It is used to verify and validate the way a particular test piece has been welded and also lists and references all mechanical and non-destructive testing and subsequent report with numbers associated with Code / Standard compliance.

Consequently, if we weld it the same way, we can expect that it will produce a sound weld with the required mechanical properties using the same amps, volts, travel speed, position, gas, material, joint details etc.

WELDING PROCEDURES REQUIREMENTS - AS1554.1SP

Is the document that is issued to the workshop as a work instruction for the welders to follow and list such things as:

  • Welders
  • Inspections
  • Records for testing
  • Basic welding requirements
  • Details of welding connections
  • Qualification of welding personnel
  • Qualification of procedures and personal
  • Methods for qualifying of a weld procedure

“Prior to and during welding, the welding inspector shall inspect the set-up of work and ensure that – welds are in accordance with drawings, welding is carried out on specified equipment, correct procedures are maintained and work is performed in accordance with the standard”
